What is Zirconia Crown, How Is It Done? Treatment Process and Results

Zirconia crowns are today most popular aesthetic and functional restoration option in dentistry. Metal-free, biocompatible and natural-looking. This guide covers scientific properties, application process and long-term success data.

## What is Zirconia? Zirconia (ZrO2) is a high-performance ceramic found in nature as zircon mineral, used in dentistry stabilized with yttrium oxide. Zirconia entered dentistry in the mid-1990s and has now replaced metal-ceramic crowns as the standard material for aesthetic restorations. ## Types of Zirconia ## 3Y-TZP Highest mechanical strength (1,000-1,200 MPa). Preferred for posterior teeth under high occlusal load. Lower translucency. ## 4Y-PSZ and 5Y-PSZ Increased translucency with higher yttrium ratio. Preferred for anterior teeth for more natural appearance. ## Ultra-high Translucent Zirconia Latest generation. Journal of Esthetic Dentistry 2023: optical properties close to natural tooth opacity. ## Why Zirconia? - No metal ion release (ideal for metal allergy patients) - Among most biocompatible dental materials - Natural-looking aesthetics - High mechanical strength for both anterior and posterior teeth - Positive effect on gum health - Excellent color stability, no darkening over time ## Who Is It Suitable For? - Teeth with major substance loss due to fracture or decay - Color problems not correctable with veneers - Tooth shape and size anomalies - Root canal-treated teeth needing support - Replacing old metal-ceramic crowns - Patients with metal allergies ## Treatment Process ## 1. Examination and Planning Oral examination, X-ray and CBCT if needed. Digital Smile Design (DSD) can simulate results. Color selection performed. ## 2. Tooth Preparation Under local anesthesia, tooth is reduced by specific amounts: - Occlusal surface: 1.5-2.0mm - Axial surface: 1.0-1.5mm Temporary crown placed after preparation. ## 3. Impression Taking Traditional impression material or digital intraoral scanner (iTero, CEREC, 3Shape). Digital scanners increase patient comfort and speed lab process. ## 4. Laboratory Production CAD/CAM software designs the crown from digital data. Zirconia blocks are milled and sintered at 1,450-1,550°C. - Same-day production with CEREC technology - Traditional lab: 3-7 working days ## 5. Trial and Cementation Crown is tried in mouth, fit, color and bite checked. Cemented with resin cement after approval. ## Scientific Success Data Journal of Dentistry 2023, 15-year systematic review (23 studies, 4,000+ crowns): - 5-year cumulative success: 97.4% - 10-year cumulative success: 94.1% - 15-year cumulative success: 89.7% - Most common failure: veneer chipping 3.2% - Zirconia framework fracture: 0.4% ## Maintenance - Brush twice daily with soft bristle brush - Daily floss or interdental brush - Professional cleaning every 6 months - Avoid biting hard objects - Night guard if bruxism present ## Prices in Turkey Single tooth zirconia crown: - Germany: 600-1,200 EUR - UK: 500-900 GBP - Turkey: 80-250 EUR (same quality CAD/CAM production) Full mouth restoration (28 teeth): 2,500-7,000 EUR in Turkey.

What is Zirconia Crown, How Is It Done? Treatment Process and Results

Zirconia crowns are today most popular aesthetic and functional restoration option in dentistry. Metal-free, biocompatible and natural-looking. This guide covers scientific properties, application process and long-term success data.

What is Zirconia?

Zirconia (ZrO2) is a high-performance ceramic found in nature as zircon mineral, used in dentistry stabilized with yttrium oxide. Zirconia entered dentistry in the mid-1990s and has now replaced metal-ceramic crowns as the standard material for aesthetic restorations.

Types of Zirconia

3Y-TZP

Highest mechanical strength (1,000-1,200 MPa). Preferred for posterior teeth under high occlusal load. Lower translucency.

4Y-PSZ and 5Y-PSZ

Increased translucency with higher yttrium ratio. Preferred for anterior teeth for more natural appearance.

Ultra-high Translucent Zirconia

Latest generation. Journal of Esthetic Dentistry 2023: optical properties close to natural tooth opacity.

Why Zirconia?

  • No metal ion release (ideal for metal allergy patients)
  • Among most biocompatible dental materials
  • Natural-looking aesthetics
  • High mechanical strength for both anterior and posterior teeth
  • Positive effect on gum health
  • Excellent color stability, no darkening over time
  • Who Is It Suitable For?

  • Teeth with major substance loss due to fracture or decay
  • Color problems not correctable with veneers
  • Tooth shape and size anomalies
  • Root canal-treated teeth needing support
  • Replacing old metal-ceramic crowns
  • Patients with metal allergies
  • Treatment Process

    1. Examination and Planning

Oral examination, X-ray and CBCT if needed. Digital Smile Design (DSD) can simulate results. Color selection performed.

    2. Tooth Preparation

Under local anesthesia, tooth is reduced by specific amounts:

  • Occlusal surface: 1.5-2.0mm
  • Axial surface: 1.0-1.5mm
  • Temporary crown placed after preparation.

    3. Impression Taking

Traditional impression material or digital intraoral scanner (iTero, CEREC, 3Shape). Digital scanners increase patient comfort and speed lab process.

    4. Laboratory Production

CAD/CAM software designs the crown from digital data. Zirconia blocks are milled and sintered at 1,450-1,550°C.

  • Same-day production with CEREC technology
  • Traditional lab: 3-7 working days
  • 5. Trial and Cementation

Crown is tried in mouth, fit, color and bite checked. Cemented with resin cement after approval.

    Scientific Success Data

Journal of Dentistry 2023, 15-year systematic review (23 studies, 4,000+ crowns):

  • 5-year cumulative success: 97.4%
  • 10-year cumulative success: 94.1%
  • 15-year cumulative success: 89.7%
  • Most common failure: veneer chipping 3.2%
  • Zirconia framework fracture: 0.4%
  • Maintenance

  • Brush twice daily with soft bristle brush
  • Daily floss or interdental brush
  • Professional cleaning every 6 months
  • Avoid biting hard objects
  • Night guard if bruxism present
  • Prices in Turkey

    Single tooth zirconia crown:

  • Germany: 600-1,200 EUR
  • UK: 500-900 GBP
  • Turkey: 80-250 EUR (same quality CAD/CAM production)
  • Full mouth restoration (28 teeth): 2,500-7,000 EUR in Turkey.
